North-West Frontier Province
The North-West Frontier Province was founded as a British India province in 1901, unofficially called “Sarhad”, “frontier” in Urdu. Inhabited by the Pashtun people, they often used the name “Pakhtunwa”. Its flag, adopted in 1970, was dark green, with, in white, an image of the Jamrud Fort, stylised mountains and the crescent and star, surrounded by a wreath. At the bottom was a scroll with the initials “NWFP”.
