Federally Administered Tribal Areas
The Federally Administered Tribal Areas were set up in 1947 as a semi-autonomous tribal region in the southwest of the North-West Frontier Province, along the Afghan border. It was made up of seven tribal agencies (districts) and six frontier regions and directly governed by the federal government. In 2018 it was abolished and merged with the province (meanwhile named Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). Its flag, adopted in 1970, was dark green, with, in white, an image of the Jamrud Fort, stylised mountains, crossed swords and the crescent and star, surrounded by a wreath. At the bottom was a scroll with the initials “FATA”.
