The Jongmyo Daeje Ceremony, Seoul

King and official

The last procedure in the Jongmyo Jerye, the ritual for sending off the spirits, called Mangryorye. On the left the Choheongwan, the First Wine Offerer, traditionally the Joseon king who would offer the first wine to the royal ancestors. He wears the “Myeol-nyu-gwan”, crown or headdress partly obscuring his face as commoners could not directly look at the king.
