The Jongmyo Daeje Ceremony, Seoul

Last procedures

The Joseon king (now a descendant) and an official at the last procedure in the Jongmyo Jerye at the Mangryorye, the ritual for sending off the spirits, emerging from the Yeongnyeongjeon, the Hall of Eternal Peace, housing 16 spirit chambers of the royal family. The “Myeol-nyu-gwan”, crown or headdress worn by the king would partly obscure his face as commoners should not directly gaze at it. He is the Choheongwan, the First Wine Offerer, who offers the first wine to the royal ancestors.
