Imperial Rome, past glory

Ancient Rome, the Tiber

Italo Gismondi's large model of what ancient Rome looked like around in the early 4th century during Constantine's reign, in the Museo della Civiltà Romana. The Tiber river is on the right with the Isola Tiberina, the island in the river, and behind it Pons Aemilius, the first stone bridge; it is now called Ponte Rotto (“Broken Bridge”) as only one arch remains. In the foreground, on the left, is the Stadium of Domitian (now the Piazza Navona) with behind it the Pantheon, the only building that is still intact.
