Tigray National Regional State
The Tigray Region in the north of Ethiopia is the homeland of the Tigrayan, Irob and Kunama peoples. Its official language is Tigrinya. The city of Aksum, considered the cradle of Ethiopian civilisation, is within its borders. Its area is 50,000 km², and its capital is Mekelle. The state’s flag, based on the design of the flag of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPFL), is red with a golden yellow triangle at the hoist and a large star of the same colour in the fly, rotated to point at the fly.
