Amhara National Regional State
The Amhara Region, in the north-west of Ethiopia, is the homeland of the Amhara people who constitute over 91% of the population. It covers an area of around 155,000 km², and it has the historic cities of Gondar and Lalibela within its borders. The state’s capital is Bahir Dar. The flag of Amhara is golden with a broad red diagonal across the centre, charged with a golden star. These are the traditional colours of the Amhara.
