Afar National Regional State (before 2012)
The Afar Region in Northeastern Ethiopia is the homeland of the Afar people. It has an area of around 72,000 km², and its capital was the city of Aysaita (Awsa) before it was replaced in 2007 by the planned city of Semera (Samara). The flag, used until 2012, was a vertical triband of green, white and blue with the regional emblem, two crossed swords and a red pentagram, in the centre.
