Swan mosaic, Basilica of Soli

The iconic mosaic of a swan, one of the panels unique to Basilica A in Soli or Soloi, an ancient Greek city on the coast in the Gulf of Morphou; it is set on a dark blue roundel with simple flowers. In the angles are lotus-like plants and in the surrounding border, grape vines springing from canthari - two-handed wine jugs. The panels, depicting birds and dolphins are perhaps symbolic of earthly paradise.
