Western Friesland
On 28 May 1932, after five years of construction, the “Afsluitdijk” was completed, an Enclosure Dam of 32 kilometres, running between the north of Noord Holland to the coast of Friesland. It turned the Zuiderzee, an inland sea, into the IJsselmeer, a freshwater lake. The dyke was closed at this spot, where from the top of the monument both the North Sea (left) and the IJsselmeer can be seen, looking towards Friesland.
