Traditions and Folklore in Friesland

Ringsteken in Harlingen

“Ringrijden” or “ringsteken” is a tradition in Friesland in which a couple in early 19th century traditional costume ride in a horse-drawn two-wheeled carriage; along the route wooden “arms” with a ring stuck between two “fingers” are placed; the woman holds a wooden pointed stick and tries to collect the rings while riding past at a steady trot. This is often part of festivities, like the “Visserijdagen” (Fishery Days), a yearly festival in the port city of Harlingen.
