Bukhara: the historic centre
The massive walls of the the Ark of Bukhara, a fortress initially built and occupied around the 5th century CE. During much of the fortress' history it was inhabited by the various royal courts that held sway over the region surrounding Bukhara. It was a fortress until 1920 it was conquered by Russia and greatly damaged by aerial bombardment.
