Bukhara: the historic centre

Ark of Bukhara entrance

Entrance to the Ark of Bukhara, the fortress and residence of the Emir of Bukhara until 1920, when it was conquered by the Red Army and the last Emir, Alim Khan, had to flee. It was initially built and occupied around the 5th century CE and was inhabited by the various royal courts that held sway over the region surrounding Bukhara during much of that time.
