The iNcwala or First Fruits Ceremony in 1970

Marching men

Young men marching near the Royal “sibaya” cattle byre enclosure in Lobamba, carrying shields and spears and wearing the “siketja”, a cloak of horse tails that is only worn during the iNcwala. The man in front carries a trombone on which a kind of reveille is played to summon the warriors. Traditionally a conch shell was used; brass instruments were first brought to Swaziland by men who had been working in South Africa.
