Princely State of Kashmir and Jammu, 1936
In 1936 the Princely State of Kashmir and Jammu added, in white, a plough’s silhouette, probably representing agriculture. In 1947 the Maharaja, Hari Singh initially wanted independence but was faced with a rebellion and appealed for Indian troops; he was forced to accept accession to India. In the subsequent war, the state was divided. In the Indian-administered part, the flag was retained (with three white vertical bars added to the design in 1953), but the flag disappeared in Pakistan.
