Shan State
Shan State, in the north east of the country, covers an area of 155,800 km², almost a quarter of Myanmar's total area, with a population of almost 5 million. It shares borders with China, Laos and Thailand. Its capital is Taunggyi, in the south west of the state. The flag of Shan State has three horizontal stripes of yellow, green and red, symbolising, from the top: Buddhism, the green mountain plateaus and courage. The white circle is the moon, standing for purity and peace.
