Narok is a small town about 150 kilometres west of Nairobi. It is mainly inhabited by Maasai, a Nilotic pastoral people, with their distinctive customs and dress.
The road leading from Narok to the Maasai Mara National Reserve on the Tanzanian border lead via the Loita Plains through Maasai territory. Herdboys are looking after the cattle. The “moran”, warriors, carry spears; they used to need those to protect their cattle from lions.
Maasai Mara National Reserve is an expanse of African Savannah, with a large diversity of wildlife. It borders the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and is a favourite destination for wildlife safaris.
