Pisa, Toscana’s gem

Duomo and Leaning Tower

The impressive Romanesque Duomo, the medieval cathedral, entitled to Santa Maria Assunta (St. Mary of the Assumption). Construction began in 1064 by the architect Busketo. Construction of the Campanile, its free standing bell tower, began in August 1173 by its architect, Bonanno Pisano; the tower already began to lean 5 years later. Work has been done to stop the further leaning of the 56 metres high tower and it seems to be stabilised.
