Apulia, Italy’s far south east
The Castella Svevo or Swabian castle in Bari. The original Norman structure was built around 1131 over a Roman fort by Roger II of Sicily. Destroyed in 1156 during the revolt against the Normans' misrule that had led to pillage and the total destruction of the city under William I (known afterwards as “William The Bad”), it was rebuilt by Frederick II of Hohenstaufen. The bastions with corner towers were added in the 16th century during Spanish rule.
