Herculaneum

Herculaneum street

Houses with two stories line a street in the old Roman town of Herculaneum. The town was completely buried during the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. In time a town, Resina, was built over it, starting around the year 1000. In 1709, the ancient Roman city was rediscovered and since then, Herculaneum has been partially excavated. In 1969, the town changed its name from Resina to Ercolano, the Italian modernisation of the ancient name in honour of the ancient city.
