Herculaneum

Neptune and Amphitrite

The mosaic of Neptune and Amphitrite, surrounded by a decorative motif, on the back wall of the atrium or garden court of the House named after it in Herculaneum. In the legend, Neptune saw Amphitrite dancing with the Nereids on the island of Naxos, carried her off, and married her. Actually, Neptune, the sea god, is the Roman name for the Greek god Poseidon and Amphitrite is the Greek name for his wife: her Roman name is Salacia.
