Italian Republic, 1946
The Italian Republic (Repubblica italiana) was established after a referendum in 1946 when the monarchy was abolished. The arms of the House of Savoy was removed the same year. The Italian flag was modelled on that of revolutionary France at the end of the 18th Century, with green substituted for blue. It is possible the colours came from the colours of the uniforms of the Civic militia of Milan: green and white; red parts were added in 1796 when it became the National Guard.
