Kingdom of Italy, 1805

Kingdom of Italy, 1805

On 26 January 1802 the Cisalpine Republic became the Italian Republic when a change in the constitution allowed the French First Consul Napoleon to become its president. On 17 March 1805 it became the Kingdom of Italy, with Napoleon as its King. It lasted until 11 April 1814 with Napoleon's defeat and fall; former monarchies were reestablished and the rest was annexed by Austria. The design of the flag, adopted on 20 August 1802, had been changed to a red square with a white rhombus and a small green square in the middle of the rhombus. From 1805 some flags were in proportions 2:3, making the squares rectangular and Napoleon's standard was charged with his eagle in the centre.
