Fountain of Neptune

The Fontana di Piazza or fountain of Neptune, the Sea god, by Bartolomeo Ammannati and his pupils (1563-75) on the Piazza della Signoria in Florence. It was commissioned on the occasion of the wedding of Francesco I de' Medici with grand duchess Johanna of Austria in 1565. Neptune's face resembles that of Grand Duke Cosimo I de' Medici, meant to be an allusion to the dominion of the Florentines over the sea. The statue of Neptune is a copy made in the nineteenth century: the original is in the National Museum.
