Gondar, Ethiopia’s first Capital

Falasha clay statues

Small clay statues made by the Falasha or Bete Israel, who adhere to the Jewish faith and have their own synagogue near the town of Gondar, western Ethiopia. All Falasha were apparently subsequently “rescued” by Israeli troops during the short-lived communist regime of Mengistu Haile Mariam and taken to Israel.
