Gazimağusa (Famagusta), a walled city on the east coast
The Venetian governor’s palace (Palazzo del Proveditore), built around 1550 opposite the Cathedral, on the ruins of the 13th century Lusignan palace that had been used as accommodation for the kings of Cyprus till 1369, when earthquakes destroyed it. The Ottomans largely destroyed the Venetian structure, but the three-arched entrance to one side of Namik Kemal Square remains. It mirrored the triumphal archways of ancient Rome; the Roman columns were brought from Salamis.
