Lefkoşa, the Turkish part of Nicosia

In the Selimiye Mosque, North Nicosia

The interior of the Selimiye Mosque, the principal mosque in North Nicosia. It was the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint Sophia, the oldest surviving Gothic church in Cyprus and its largest, 66 metres long and 22 metres wide in its interior. The cathedral’s construction started in 1209, probably on the site of an earlier Byzantine church. In 1570 the city fell to Ottoman forces, and it was converted to a mosque.
