Lefkoşa, the Turkish part of Nicosia
The Selimiye Mosque, historically known as Cathedral of Saint Sophia, a former Roman Catholic cathedral converted into a mosque, in North Nicosia, the principal mosque of the city. It is housed in the largest and oldest surviving Gothic church in Cyprus, possibly constructed on the site of an earlier Byzantine church. The construction of the cathedral began in 1209. After the city fell to Ottoman forces on 9 September 1570, it was converted to a mosque, and two minarets added.
