Santiago de Cuba, the second-largest Cuban city

Tomás Estrada Palma's tomb

The tomb of Tomás Estrada Palma (1835 – 1908) in the Cementerio Santa Ifigenia. He served as the first President of Cuba from 20 May 1902 until 28 September 1906. During his presidency, Cuba’s infrastructure, communication and public health was improved, but he is now mainly remembered for being the president that allowed the Platt Amendment to be enacted in the country, ensuring American political dominance over Cuba, including leasing, in perpetuity, the Guantánamo Bay area to the United States.
