Santiago de Cuba, the second-largest Cuban city
The Antonio Maceo Revolution Square, at the entrance of the city of Santiago de Cuba; with 16 metres in height it is the highest statue, by sculptor Alberto Lescay, in the whole country, in honour to the local hero Antonio Maceo atop his horse and surrounded by 23 raised machetes. Lt. General José Antonio de la Caridad Maceo y Grajales (1845 – 1896) was second-in-command of the Cuban Army of Independence; nicknamed the “Bronze Titan”, he was one of the most noteworthy guerrilla leaders.
