Santiago de Cuba, the second-largest Cuban city

Plaza de Dolores, Santiago de Cuba

Plaza de Dolores, a leafy square dating from the early 17th century; until 1776 it was the land entry for agrarian products and a public market until 1859. The statue is of Francisco Vicente Aguilera (1821 - 1877), a Cuban patriot who, in 1851, conspired against the Spanish, supporting Céspedes, freeing his slaves in 1868 and selling his property to raise funds for the Cuban Army of independence. In 1871 he went to the United States to raise money for the war effort, but died completely destitute in New York in 1877.
