Zagreb, capital of Croatia

Ban Jelačić statue

The large equestrian statue of Ban Jelačić (1801 – 1859) on the square bearing his name. It was created by Austrian sculptor Anton Dominik Fernkorn, installed on 19 October 1866 by Austrian authorities, and removed in 1947 by the communists. On 11 October 1990, during the breakup of Yugoslavia, it was returned to the square. Ban Josip Jelačić ruled Croatia between 23 March 1848 and 19 May 1859.
