Ban Josip Jelačić Square (Trg bana Josipa Jelačića), the central square of Zagreb, named after Josip Jelačić (1801 – 1859), the Ban (ruler) of Croatia between 23 March 1848 and 19 May 1859, whose statue is central. He was a member of the House of Jelačić and a noted army general. He is remembered for his military campaigns during the Revolutions of 1848 and the abolition of serfdom in Croatia.
