Statue of Grgur Ninski

The statue of Grgur Ninski (Gregory of Nin), a medieval Croatian bishop who introduced the national language in religious services after the Great Assembly in 926. The 8.5-metre tall statue by Ivan Meštrović was erected in September 1929, first in the Peristyle of Diocletian’s Palace and is now just outside the Golden Gate. Behind it is the 18th-century bell tower of the Saint Arnir, the remains of a Benedictine monastery of 1069.
