Tasmania, 1876
The flag of Tasmania is a British Blue Ensign defaced with the state badge, depicting a red lion passant on a white disc. A gold lion badge, indicating historical ties with England, had been adopted in 1875 as the Governor's badge and, surrounded with a green garland, placed on a Union Jack as the Governor's flag. A red lion badge was approved by the Colonial office in March 1876 and the flag was officially announced on 25 September. Its design has remained unchanged since then, save for a slight alteration in the rendition of the lion in 1975 when the flag was officially proclaimed as the “Tasmanian Flag”.
