Emirate of Fujairah 1952
In 1952 the Sheikh of the Sharqi clan, a vassal of Sharjah, was recognised by the British as the independent Emir of Fujairah when Kalba was annexed to Sharjah. The Emir's family, related to the rulers of Muscat and Oman, had not signed the Maritime Treaty with Britain and had kept the traditional plain red flag of the Ibadites, (although it adopted the white bordered red flag for use at sea in 1952). To distinguish Fujairah's flag from the other Gulf flags, a flag was adopted in which the country's name was inscribed in white.
