The Province of Groningen
Gravestones and view from the “wierde”, an artificial hill in the village of Ezinge. These hills (called “terp” in neighbouring Friesland) with villages on top were built from the 4th century BCE onwards as a protection from the sea when the surrounding land flooded. Maintaining and enlarging the wierden came to an end in the 11th century CE, when dykes were built to protect the land. From 1920 the wierde at Ezinge was partially dug away and the earth was sold as fertiliser.
