Dutch Caribbean, 1792
The Dutch Chartered West India Company became defunct in 1792. The flag of the Netherlands was derived from the orange-white-blue “Prinsenvlag”, the oldest Republican tricolour in the world. It was introduced in the struggle against the Spanish under the leadership of the Prince of Oranje Nassau in 1579. The orange colour was at one stage replaced by red, although orange (for the House of Orange) has remained the National Colour of the Netherlands.
