Samarkand: towards the outskirts
The Ulugh Beg Observatory, built in the 1420s by the Timur's grandson, ruler and astronomer Ulugh Beg and considered by scholars to have been one of the finest observatories in the Islamic world. It was destroyed by religious fanatics in 1449 and only re-discovered in 1908.
