Samarkand: the historic centre
The Ulugh Beg Madrasah (1417–1420), Tilya-Kori Madrasah (1646–1660) and the Sher-Dor Madrasah (1619–1636) on the Registan, the heart of the ancient city of Samarkand during the Timurid dynasty; a public square, where people gathered to hear royal proclamations and a place of public executions. The platform in the foreground was built for celebrations a few weeks later.
