Bukhara: the historic centre
The 17th-century Juma (Friday) Mosque, with its slender wooden pillars, at the top of the entrance ramp in the Ark of Bukhara, a massive fortress initially built and occupied around the 5th century CE. During much of the fortress' history it was inhabited by the various royal courts that held sway over the region surrounding Bukhara. The Ark was used as a fortress until it fell to Russia in 1920.
