Bukhara: the historic centre
The Kalyan minaret (Minâra-i Kalân (Pesian/Tajik for “Grand Minaret”), also known as the Tower of Death because for centuries criminals were executed by being thrown from the top. It is the most famed part of the Po-i-Kalyan (Uzbek: Poi Kalon, “The Foot of the Great”), an Islamic religious complex located in the historic part of Bukhara. It is 9 metres in diameter at the bottom, 6 metres at the top and 45.6 metres high.
