Edirne, the second major capital of the Ottomans
Statues of champions of oil-wrestling (Yağlı güreş), the Turkish national sport. It is so-called because the wrestlers douse themselves with olive oil. The annual Kırkpınar tournament, held in Edirne since 1346, is the oldest continuously running, sanctioned sporting competition in the world. The statues are next to the Kırkpınar Yağlı Güreş Alanı, the stadium in Sarayiçi, close to the site where the Imperial palace stood when Edirne was the Ottoman capital.
