Edirne, the second major capital of the Ottomans
The Meriç Köprüsü, or Yeni Köprü (New Bridge); also named Mecidiye Bridge, after Sultan Abdülmecid I. Construction of the bridge, crossing the Meriç river, began under the Ottoman sultan Mahmud II (who ruled from 1808 to 1839), and was completed in 1843 by his successor Abdülmecid I, who ruled from 1839 to 1861. The 263 metre long and 7 metre wide bridge has twelve arches. In the background the four minarets of the Selimiye Mosque.
