Edirne, the second major capital of the Ottomans
Ottoman headstones with in the background the Selimiye Mosque; commissioned by Sultan Selim II, it was built by architect Mimar Sinan between 1569 and 1575. It is one of the highest achievements of Islamic architecture. It has the highest minarets in Turkey, at 71 metres and its cupola is higher than that of Hagia Sophia, the Byzantine Orthodox Cathedral (now museum) in İstanbul.
