Mosque and fort, Eski Bayazıt

The ruins of the Eski Kale (Old Castle), on the hill east of the İshak Paşa Sarayı (Ishak Pasha Palace); it was probably founded in Urartian times around 800 BCE. In the foreground the 16th-century mosque of Eski Bayazıt, a town demolished by the Turkish army in the early 1930s after a Kurdish uprising, leading to the founding of modern Doğubayazıt, about 8 kilometres west.
