Timor-Leste, 2002
Following the overwhelming victory of FRETILIN in the parliamentary elections, the 1975 flag was readopted and raised on 20 May 2002 at the independence celebrations. The flag's proportions are now 1:2, and the colours a shade darker, although this isn't fixed officially and both proportions are in use. The official symbolism of the colours is: golden-yellow for “the traces of colonialism”, black represents “the obscurantism that needs to be overcome”, red is for “the struggle for national liberation” and white symbolises “peace”.
