Paramaribo, Suriname's Capital
The Ministry of Finance, a monumental brick structure with classical portico and clock tower, built in 1841 and originally intended as the Town Hall of Paramaribo. The bricks had been transported from the Netherlands by sailing ship. The tower was modelled on the one of the town hall of Groningen in the Netherlands. To the left is the Court of Justice, built of red bricks in 1790. In front is the statue of Johan Adolf “Jopie” Pengel, Prime Minister of Suriname from 1963 to 1969.
