Marowijne, Suriname's North-east

Engraved stone, Bigiston

The stone with inscriptions, made long ago by local Arawak Amerindians, in the Marowijne river at the village of Bigiston (from “Big Stone”), in eastern Suriname, on the west bank of the Marowijne River (Maroni River). It used to be an Indian village called Temeri, with a mixed Arawak and Maroon population.
