Commewijne, Suriname's Plantation District
Hendrik, a Javanese former worker here, showing the monument dedicated to the first Javanese workers who landed in Suriname on 9 August 1890, in Mariënburg, a former sugarcane plantation, factory and village, situated in the district of Commewijne, east of Fort Nieuw Amsterdam. In 1745, Mariënburg was founded as a sugar plantation by Maria de la Jaille and became a coffee plantation in the 19th century. The factory closed in 1986.
